It's clear Facebook wants to be cool with young users in some way as it's constantly trying new things. New features from its flagship app Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger all the time. The latest to join the list is Whale - a meme creator app from a group of developers within Facebook.

For some reason this a good for Facebook's resurrection. The internet is full of memes and the company wants to capitalize on the jokes alongside messaging, photo-sharing and anything cool.

How it works

You upload your photo or can choose from the provided library of a combination of text, emojis and filters waiting for it to go viral. The resulting meme creation can be saved and shared on social media. Users can be able to choose between blank, 2-grid up to 4-grid layouts or use a free form draw tool. The team behind the app called (NPE)New Product Experimentation. They have previously released two apps Bump and Aux targeting the youth.

Bump - a chat app that helps strangers connect over simple ice breaker questions
Aux - a group listening app that lets you pick songs and compete for their group's virtual auxiliary cable

When it comes to impressing the youth, Facebook seems to be continuously losing ground to the likes Snapchat and TikTok. With this, it could be fun depending on how useful the meme images it has in its library. Something like the Smudge cat meme is definitely a good one.

It's not available yet for everyone (at the time of writing) and neither of the previous apps by this team has gained traction so it's unclear whether the company will fully roll it out.
